Create a Checklist

Reveal a list one item at a time — checklists, numbered steps, mistake lists, and side-by-side pros and cons.

Beginnertutorial

Goal: reveal a list on screen, one item at a time. Expected result: a short animated MP4 of your list. Required plan: Right now (beta): everything is free and unwatermarked. Nothing below is charged yet. Required assets: none — just your list items. Estimated time: about 4 minutes.

#Overview

List templates reveal items in sequence so viewers read along at your pace instead of seeing everything at once. They live in the Lists category. This guide covers four:

  • Checklist reveal — items tick in one by one with checkmarks.
  • X-list (mistakes) — the same reveal, but marked with an X for "don't do this."
  • Numbered list — an ordered 1, 2, 3 list.
  • Pros & cons — two columns, the good on one side and the bad on the other.

#When to Use It

Use Checklist reveal for steps, requirements, or a "here's what you need" moment. Use X-list (mistakes) for a "stop doing these" segment. Use Numbered list when order matters. Use Pros & cons to weigh two sides of a decision.

#Before You Begin

You'll export an MP4, so use a Chromium browser — Google Chrome (desktop) is recommended. No account is required. Write your items short — a few words each reads best.

#Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the studio at https://heymotion.io/app.
  2. Under Lists, pick Checklist reveal, X-list (mistakes), Numbered list, or Pros & cons.
  3. In the edit panel, type each item into its field or textarea. For Pros & cons, fill both columns.
  4. Set Clip length (seconds) long enough for every item to appear and be readable — the more items, the longer you'll need.
  5. Press ↺ Replay to check the pacing.
  6. Click ⬇ Export MP4 to render.

Tip

Keep lists to three to five items on screen. Long lists either run past a comfortable clip length or get too small to read.

#Example

A "5 mistakes" segment: choose X-list (mistakes), enter five short items, set the clip to 8 seconds so each X lands with breathing room, and export. Cut it under narration that names each mistake in turn.

#Best Practices

Match the clip length to the number of items so each has time to appear. Keep every item to a short phrase. Use Checklist reveal for positives and X-list (mistakes) for negatives so the checkmark or X reinforces the message.

#Common Mistakes

Setting the clip too short is the common one — later items barely appear before the clip ends. Overpacking the list is the other; trim to the essentials.

Land a number inside your list segment with a Stat Card.
